History of Gordon Terrace
Gordon Terrace in the Newington area of Edinburgh was named after one of the Gilmour family of Liberton and Craigmillar Estate, Major Robert Gordon Gordon Gilmour. (Later Brig-gen Sir, 1st Baron).
The Gordon Terrace area, comprises of a long narrow strip bounded on the east by Liberton Road (the A701) and the west by the Gordon Terrace frontage properties. The development was designed to have a high-level crescent above the main road - Liberton Road - and separated from it by a communal garden. This crescent, originally called South Craigmillar Park (and later Gordon Terrace), has some fine and substantial sandstone Victorian and Edwardian villas constructed for Edinburgh merchants in the closing years of Victoria’s reign.
